DIED—at her residence in Sugarcreek township, January 26, Margaret HOLMES, consort of Daniel HOLMES, in the 45th year of her age.

Her disease was the King’s Evil or scrofula, which first made its appearance in the left breast some twelve or fifteen months previous to her death. Her physician recommended her to have the tumor dissected; and beyond the expectations of all, she consented to have it taken off—the orifice being made at least five inches in diameter and extending much farther under her arm—all of which she bore with a degree of patience seldom seen. The operation being performed on the 9th of April, great hopes were entertained by all that it would have the desired effect of restoring her to health. Alas, the wound had but healed (perhaps three or four weeks) until it began to make its appearance again in the same place, and ceased not till it pervaded her whole frame, and put a period to her earthly pilgrimage on the day above mentioned. (This is followed by a poem, which has been omitted.)

[Note: Daniel and Margaret Holmes are mentioned in the History of Greene County, Ohio, under Sugar Creek Township. Margaret’s maiden name was BAIN.]
